Things to keep in mind while wearing fixed aligners

1. Discomfort after first wearing: The fixed appliance is bonded to the teeth through special materials. Within a week or two of first wearing, the teeth may feel slightly sore due to the force, and the chewing may be weak, and the oral mucosa may also be worn down by the appliance. Ulcers appear, which will disappear automatically after a week or two. Generally, no special treatment is required. Just drink plenty of water.

2. Oral hygiene: Wearing orthodontic appliances increases the difficulty of oral cleaning. Brush your teeth more carefully. You can choose special orthodontic toothbrushes and mouthwashes to develop a good habit of brushing your teeth after every meal and before going to bed. It is best not to eat less. Eat snacks and maintain a good oral hygiene environment to prevent the occurrence of dental caries, gingivitis and periodontitis.

3. Diet: Due to the discomfort of the teeth within a week of wearing the appliance, you can specially prepare some semi-liquid food, and you can eat normally after a week. However, during the entire orthodontic process, you should pay attention to avoid large, sticky, and hard foods, which will damage or cause the aligner to fall off, thus affecting the treatment effect. Large pieces of food should be cut into small pieces and sent to the mouth. Large steaks, small steaks, chicken legs, chicken wings, lobsters, crabs, etc. should be cut with a knife or torn into small pieces by hand, and the meat and bones cannot be divided with teeth. or shell. Sticky things such as hard candy, soft candy, bubble gum, chewing gum, etc. and glutinous rice and glutinous rice flour products such as rice cakes and yuanxiao cannot be eaten. Foods that need to be chewed cannot be eaten, including corn, sugar cane, popsicles, sugar-fried chestnuts, melon seeds, peanuts, walnuts, kebabs, candied haws, etc.; apples, pears, peaches and other fruits must be cut into pieces or squeezed into juice to eat; Things such as plum, lychee, longan, and jujube cannot be eaten when they have a core, and the meat on the top can be eaten after separating from the core. Other hard objects such as beef jerky, chocolate, and steak that are not rotten cannot be eaten.

4. Brackets fall off: It is common for brackets to fall off due to excessive chewing force. Because each bracket is ligated and fixed to the arch wire, it is generally not swallowed. If it falls off, it should be avoided and discarded. Contact your attending doctor in time to see if Re-paste is possible. If the brackets fall off too many times or are lost, new brackets need to be replaced, which may increase your extra cost, affect the treatment effect, and prolong the treatment time.

5. Regular follow-up: After the appliance is placed, the follow-up is usually once a month. Since teeth move very slowly, it takes time to straighten teeth. After moving a certain distance, the orthopedic force applied to the arch wire decreases or ceases to exist, so regular follow-up visits are required to adjust until the dentition deformity is corrected.

6. Persistent wearing: When the orthodontic treatment is nearing the end, a retainer is made according to the patient’s condition to maintain the orthodontic effect achieved. Because the muscles and nerves of the body need an adaptation process for the state of children’s teeth after orthodontic treatment, if the retainer is not worn, the possibility of recurrence is relatively high.
