Twenty-seven dental residents at the University at Buffalo have voted to unionize in an effort to gain better training, staffing and pay, local media reported Tuesday.
“We are excited about the changes that have come from the hard work of our union and UB School of Medicine residents,” said Riley Steed, PGY1 dental resident, in a press release. “We look forward to building a strong dental training program through collaboration with the university, union and employers.”
According to 2022 statistics, an estimated 8% of the physician workforce, or 70,000 physicians, are unionized. Previously, more than 74% of practicing physicians are now hospital employees, a stark contrast to a decade ago, when 60% of physician practices were independent and now they are a minority.
“Like other residents, they deserve a contract that reflects their contributions to patient care and supports their professional growth,” said UAPD President Dr. Stuart Bussey.
