According to the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association (CDHA), Health Minister Mark Holland says the necessary approvals have been received to implement equalization of independent dental hygienist fees early in the new year.
“It is fundamentally unfair that independent dental practices and dental offices do not have the same fees,” Holland said. “I am here today to tell you that the fees have been set. We will move to equalization as soon as possible, early in the new year. All necessary approvals have been received.”
The CDHA warmly welcomed the announcement, which aligns with the association’s call for equal treatment of hygienists in dental offices and private health practices.
The Canada Dental Care Plan (CDCP) fee guidelines currently show that independent dental hygienists are reimbursed at significantly lower rates than services completed in dental offices. The association believes this disparity is unfair, especially considering that many dental hygienists have similar overhead costs to dental offices and, in some cases, are also charged additional fees for mobile clinics.
