This month we feature Heather Wolfram, RDH, HIAOMT. With over 15 years of clinical experience, Heather currently operates Myofunction Therapy in Thunder Bay, helping patients live fully healthy lives by assessing and addressing myofunction issues.
Why did you decide to pursue a career in dental hygiene?
I decided to pursue a career in dental hygiene because I was very interested in the medical field in high school and was fascinated by biology. The meticulous nature of clinical instrumentation also suits me well, as I am a perfectionist by nature.
Do you have a favorite patient success story?
To be honest, I could never pick just one. The greatest success is when a patient looks at me and tells me that I made a difference in their life. I think and must also point out that the patient is the one who works hard for their recovery day in and day out. Yes, I help and guide them to meet their individual functional needs, but their success must also reflect their hard work. It takes a joint effort to achieve patient-centered goals.
What accomplishment are you most proud of and why?
My son. I had my son while I was in post-secondary education, and he is my motivation to succeed—to be the best mother and role model I can be to him.
What advice do you have for other dental hygienists starting a business?
I would recommend that they do their research before taking the leap. There is a lot to consider when it comes to building a business and administration, and it can be a little overwhelming. Gaining this knowledge and insight before you get started can prevent some avoidable mistakes.
I would also recommend connecting with other independent dental hygienists who work in a focus area that interests you; for example, mobile services, myofunctional therapy, and more. Joining the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association (CDHA) Independent Practice Network (IPN) has been a great resource for me, where I can view previous and current posts and connect with independent dental hygienists across Canada.
What do you like to do for fun?
I love being outdoors. It’s a great way to de-stress and regulate my nervous system. I enjoy gardening, hiking, and biking. During the cold winter months, I try my hand at watercolor and gouache painting. A hot cup of tea and a good conversation is always a delight!
What is your favorite TV show or movie and why?
Downton Abbey. I love the era it’s set in, and I could listen to their witty comments all day long!
