Social media was originally intended for personal use, but is now increasingly used by businesses to promote their products and services, including dental practices.
To assess the impact of social media on students aged 18 and above, a study published in the journal Nature showed that social media had a significant impact on these decisions. The study showed that 29.37% of respondents said that social media influenced their choice to undergo cosmetic dental treatment.
In addition, 33.33% of participants used social media to find information about their most recent cosmetic dental treatment. This effect was consistent across gender and treatment type. However, those who had undergone treatment within the past year were more influenced by social media than those who had undergone treatment more than two years ago.
A total of 964 responses were collected for the study, but 457 of them were excluded because they did not meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria.
The researchers also cited a previous study that found that social media had a greater impact on participants who had changed dental practices in the past or this year. They suggest that as the use of social media platforms becomes more popular, further research is needed to analyze the growing influence of social media on dental patients.
