A 20-year-old man was arrested Sunday after punching a Chili’s employee in the face at the Bayside Marketplace restaurant in Miami, leaving the victim unconscious and losing five front teeth.
The attack happened around 7:15 p.m. Sunday at the Chili’s restaurant at 401 Biscayne Boulevard, according to an arrest report from the Miami Police Department.
Police said witnesses escorted an officer to the garage area where the suspect tried to flee and told the officer that the suspect’s family told them they would shoot them if they continued to follow them to their car.
More officers responded to the garage and pointed guns at the vehicle, ordering all occupants out, according to the arrest report. Police said the suspect, Montreal Brown, of Miami, exited the vehicle from the rear passenger side.
He was then detained and placed in the back seat of a police car. Police reportedly reviewed surveillance footage from inside the restaurant, which showed Brown walking up to the victim, who was clearing a table, and punching him in the face, causing the victim to fall to the ground and lose consciousness.
Police said Brown then stood over the victim with his fist clenched. Brown’s family reportedly told police that Brown suffers from some sort of illness, but Brown denied having any mental illness or learning disabilities.
Police said he refused to talk to officers about what happened. Brown was arrested for aggravated assault causing great bodily injury.
The victim was reportedly taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital for treatment. Police said the victim lost five front teeth as a result of the beating. The motive for the attack is unclear.
As of Monday, Brown was being held at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, and online jail records showed his bail as “pending.”
