The American Association for Dental, Oral and Craniofacial Research (AADOCR), Dentsply Sirona, and the Student Competition to Advance Dental Research and Its Applications (SCADA) Alumni Association announce a new research award
designed to support early career professionals in the fields of dentistry, oral and craniofacial biology. The AADOCR SCADA/Dentsply Sirona Research Award will provide a grant of up to $10,000 to selected candidates.
The SCADA program began in 1959 to encourage student involvement in dental research. Program participants will become members of the SCADA Alumni Association, a network of dental students, academic institutions, researchers and clinicians from various countries. Dentsply Sirona has supported the SCADA program since its inception.
The new award is open to postdoctoral scholars and non-tenure-track faculty, including SCADA alumni. The award is intended to promote research careers and help address the limited number of dental scientists who advance to senior academic and research positions.
Funds can be used for a variety of research-related purposes, including project implementation, infrastructure development, and paper writing. Awardees are required to submit a progress report within one year of receiving the grant.
Dentsply Sirona Chief Clinical Officer Dr. Rainer Seemann said: “Dentsply Sirona is committed to advancing oral health care through innovation and discovery. By supporting academic and independent dental research, we empower the next generation of dental professionals to explore new frontiers in oral health, ultimately improving outcomes for patients worldwide.”
Dr. Effie Ioannidou, AADOCR President said: “The new award introduces a stable source of funding for dental scientists and is another example of the support of AADOCR, its partners and the SCADA Alumni Association for research in dentistry, oral and/or craniofacial biology.”
Applications will be evaluated by a nine-member committee that includes four SCADA committee members and five members from the IADR/AADOCR.
Criteria for judging include the academic quality of the proposal, originality of the research, commitment to a DOC research career, and personal circumstances associated with pursuing a research-focused academic path.
Applications will open on July 1, 2025. The first recipient is expected to be announced at the AADOCR Annual Meeting and SCADA Awards Ceremony in San Diego, California in 2026. Funding for the award is provided jointly by the SCADA Alumni Association and AADOCR.
