The government said the Dental Council is exploring the possibility of implementing the registration system for dental professionals ahead of schedule next year.
The Legislative Council passed the amendment to the Dentists Registration Ordinance in July this year, introducing a statutory registration system for dental health professionals, which was originally scheduled to take effect within three years after the amendment was passed.
In response to written questions from Legislative Council members, the government said the Dental Council is communicating with the industry to explore the possibility of registering relevant personnel ahead of schedule in 2026.
The government also said that there is no plan to further relax the scope of work of dental hygienists to include high-risk procedures such as injecting local anesthetics.
