Kevin Brookes, 51, a Home Office employee, received a £7,000 out-of-court settlement after receiving treatment at the MyDentist Dentist Clinic on Chichester Road, Copno. He was treated there between 2010 and 2013, and his tooth decay caused difficulty in eating, infection, facial swelling and loss of self-confidence.
Kevin said: “I have had some problems over the past 13 years and are mentioned every time I visit, like toothache, tooth break, filler breaks – there always seems to be problems.
It all started with a severe toothache, which was caused by the root canal treatment they had before. At the time, you called the dentist and thought they would take you to the doctor immediately and provide help, but they were reluctant to receive me when I needed help the most. There is nothing worse than enduring a toothache.
These problems have caused Kevin to “had been in so much pain for several years”, including discomfort and repeated infections, which has led to his consideration of taking sick leave.
He said: “I had to pull my teeth because of these persistent problems. When I learned that I needed to pull my teeth, I was so shocked that I had no idea how this happened.
“I was unable to eat properly due to the severe pain and discomfort caused by infection, root canal treatment and tooth extraction, which really affected my daily life.”
In December 2022, he decided to take action and contacted the Dental Law Partnership. The professional law firm claims that an analysis of his dental records shows that several dentists at the clinic have failed to diagnose and treat caries of his five teeth in the past decade.
Tim Armitage of the Dental Legal Cooperation said: “The pain and pain our clients experience are completely unnecessary. If the dentist in question can provide a more satisfying treatment, his problems can be avoided.”
The case was settled out of court in January 2025, and First Choice Dental Limited, which operates mydentist, acknowledged no liability.
“Providing the highest quality dental care to patients is our priority and we deeply regret that in this rare case, it failed to meet our expectations.”
Kevin still needs to undergo a lot of restoration treatment in the future and may lose a tooth. “Although I’ve been through a painful period over the past decade, I’m glad I don’t feel pain anymore. However, the process is not over and it still affects my self-confidence.”
“I still need treatment, including root canal treatment and dental implants, to eventually repair the damage that has been done and may also require another tooth extraction. This will affect the rest of my life.”
Although I was not angry with this approach, I smiled in the mirror and turned around and found that I was smiling. It felt so uncomfortable. They treated me in a strange way, and it was frustrating that they despise my oral health so much and still stayed away from it.
