FDI World Dental Federation today released a new definition of “oral health” at its annual World Dental Congress in Poznan, Poland, positioning it as an essential component of overall health and well-being. The definition has been adopted by more than 200 National Dental Associations (NDAs) and will be promoted in the global oral health community.
FDI President Dr. Patrick Hescot said: “This new definition is an important milestone for the oral health industry. It is in line with our advocacy strategy of ‘Vision 2020’ and our ambition to lead the world in achieving optimal oral health. It will enable us to develop standardized assessment and measurement tools for consistent data collection around the world.”
According to FDI’s definition, oral health:
is multifaceted and includes but is not limited to the ability to speak, smile, smell, taste, touch, chew, swallow, and confidently express a range of emotions through facial expressions, and is free from pain or discomfort and disease of the craniofacial complex.
