The Orange County Health Care Agency on Thursday ordered Anaheim Children’s Dental Group to stop using water for treatments after 10 root canal patients were hospitalized with severe infections.
The agency said its lab had confirmed that multiple samples taken from the dental clinic’s water supply tested positive for mycobacteria similar to the one believed to have sickened the children, who had all undergone pulpotomies since May.
“I am issuing this order to protect the health of the dental clinic’s patients,” Dr. Eric Handler, the county’s health officer, said in a statement. “I am requiring a complete replacement of the on-site water supply to eliminate the potential threat of infection.”
