In this era of rapid change, one thing remains constant: the prevalence of oral disease has reached epidemic proportions. According to the World Health Organization’s 2022 Global Report on Oral Health, untreated oral disease affects more than half of the world’s population, with the number of cases increasing by 1 billion over the past three decades. The report urges immediate action to improve access to oral care, expand the workforce of certified oral caregivers, and prioritize prevention. 1
In addition, the convergence of emerging technologies such as computer vision, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and augmented reality is revolutionizing the dental industry. Advanced software now interprets X-rays, oral and saliva diagnostics are performed at the point of care in new ways, and patients are increasingly aware of the strong connection between oral health and overall health.
This period of transformation in the dental industry is set to have a significant impact. A new generation of thought leaders, social media influencers, and executives is emerging, informed by the wisdom and guidance of previous generations. Continuing education programs are shifting their focus from treating oral disease to emphasizing prevention. Dental conferences are being reimagined to shape the future of the industry, while legislation, advocacy, and policy efforts are driving modernization of the dental workforce.
The November special issue of Dental Hygiene is the final issue of the year and celebrates dental hygienists who are redefining dentistry, including those who are pioneering their own field. Balbir Sohi is taking mobile dentistry to new heights, even gaining national recognition on CBC’s Dragon’s Den.
The Canadian Dental Hygienists Association continues to play an important role with the appointment of Alexandra Sheppard as its new president. As the new year begins, the stage has been set for a transformative era in dentistry. We are at a critical crossroads that has the potential to significantly alter the trajectory of oral health worldwide. By embracing innovation and fostering collaboration among different stakeholders, dentistry has the potential to reduce the alarming prevalence of oral disease.
The combined efforts of visionary dental hygienists, policy advocates, and educators have highlighted the importance of a preventive approach that not only addresses current challenges but also anticipates future needs. As we begin this new chapter, it is clear that the momentum created by these trailblazers will continue to drive progress and inspire a healthier, more informed society.
