A Linn County dentist has been ordered to undergo remedial training for practicing medicine in a manner that was harmful to the public.
The Iowa Board of Dentistry recently charged Center Point dentist Terra Hickey with practicing in a manner that was harmful or injurious to the public, records from the board show. Hickey has held an Iowa license to practice dentistry since July 2000.
The board charged Hickey, who worked at Center Point Family Dentistry, with failing to identify caries at some time in the past (unspecified), failing to adequately remove caries, failing to properly perform restorations, and failing to adequately inform patients of the diagnosis and treatment options. The board also added that Hickey failed to diagnose multiple patients as having caries, which resulted in their teeth being extracted.
The investigation into Hickey’s conduct began in 2023, board records show.
The board recently agreed to resolve the case through a settlement agreement that requires Hickey to complete a comprehensive remedial education program as well as a board-approved ethics course.
In addition, Hickey’s license will be placed on probation for one year, during which time dental practice monitors will conduct spot reviews of his work. Under the agreement, Hickey also has to pay $1,200 in “probation fees.”
