The American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM) has released new guidelines that update the standards for dentists to treat and manage patients with obstructive sleep apnea and snoring through teledentistry (with oral device therapy).
The revision reflects the latest developments in the industry and provides guidance on how to appropriately integrate teledentistry while ensuring the highest quality of patient care.
“We understand the need for convenient treatment options for patients with obstructive sleep apnea,” said Michelle Cantwell, DMD, incoming chair of the AADSM Board of Directors.
The disease seriously affects quality of life and is closely associated with a variety of serious health problems, including heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and stroke.
This new guideline strikes a reasonable balance between the convenience of teledentistry and the need for face-to-face treatment.”
According to the new version of the standards, AADSM emphasizes that the following key face-to-face links must be completed to ensure the accuracy, safety, proper device fit and long-term effectiveness of oral appliance treatment:
A comprehensive examination of the patient’s existing restorations, teeth, occlusion, temporomandibular joint and craniofacial structure to ensure that they are suitable for oral appliance treatment;
Acquire accurate impressions (traditional or digital) for the production of comfortable and effective custom appliances;
Obtain a bite record to assist in determining the optimal initial position of the appliance.
Cantwell added: “The new AADSM standard provides clear guidance for the use of teledentistry in dental appliance treatments.
While virtual appointments can enhance the patient experience, clinical experience shows that some aspects must be completed face-to-face to ensure the best treatment results.”
The AADSM said the new standard is intended to provide dentists with an important operational framework to balance the convenience brought by technological innovation with the need for on-site patient care.
The society emphasizes that strict adherence to clinical processes is essential to promoting the healthy development of the field of dental sleep medicine and prioritizing patient care and treatment outcomes.
