How long before gingivitis turns into periodontitis

Gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease that is caused by the buildup of plaque and bacteria on the teeth and gums. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress into a more serious form of gum disease known as periodontitis.

The amount of time it takes for gingivitis to progress to periodontitis can vary from person to person. However, in general, it can take several months or even years for gingivitis to progress to periodontitis.

During this time, the bacteria and plaque continue to accumulate on the teeth and gums, causing inflammation and damage to the surrounding tissues. As the disease progresses, the pockets between the teeth and gums become deeper, allowing more bacteria to accumulate and causing further damage to the gums and teeth.

If left untreated, periodontitis can lead to tooth loss and other serious health problems. It is important to seek treatment for gum disease as soon as possible to prevent it from progressing and causing further damage.

The best way to prevent gum disease from progressing is to practice good oral hygiene, including brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing daily, and visiting your dentist regularly for cleanings and checkups. If you notice any signs of gum disease, such as bleeding gums, swollen gums, or bad breath, it is important to seek treatment from a dentist or periodontist as soon as possible.

In conclusion, while the progression of gingivitis to periodontitis can vary from person to person, it is important to take steps to prevent and treat gum disease to prevent it from progressing and causing further damage to your oral and overall health.
