What Not to Do After Wisdom Teeth Surgery?

Wisdom teeth, as the last teeth in the mouth, often cause a variety of problems due to lack of room to grow, such as pain, swelling, inflammation, and even affect the health of neighboring teeth. Therefore, many people will choose to remove it through surgery. However, although wisdom tooth surgery is common, if the postoperative care is not in place, it may cause complications such as infection, bleeding, and dry slot, which seriously affect the recovery process. In order to allow the wound to heal smoothly, here are some things you should never do after wisdom tooth surgery.

First. Postoperative dietary contraindications

1. Do not eat hot food immediately

After operation, there were wounds in the mouth, and the blood vessels were dilated and fragile. If you eat hot food right away, it will further dilate the blood vessels and increase the risk of bleeding. For example, hot soup just out of the pot, boiling porridge, hot coffee, etc. should be avoided. The correct way is to eat a moderate amount of normal temperature or slightly cool soft food 2-3 hours after surgery, like ice cream not only the temperature is suitable, but also play a certain role in hemostasis and analgesia; Cold milk, cold pudding and so on are also good choices. After the wound is initially stabilized, gradually transition to warm food.

2. Avoid spicy and irritating foods

Spicy foods such as chilies, Sichuan peppercorns, mustard and ginger, as well as stimulant drinks such as alcohol, strong tea and coffee, can irritate wounds, causing increased pain and swelling, and may delay healing. These foods dilate blood vessels in the mouth, increasing the chance of infection. At least 1-2 weeks after surgery, such foods should be strictly avoided, and the diet should be light and nutritious, such as chicken custard, bean curd brain, soft noodles, etc.

3. Avoid hard, rough foods

Hard foods such as nuts, hard shells, hard fried biscuits, meat with bones, and rough foods such as bread crumbs and oatmeal tend to rub against the wound during chewing, causing blood clots to fall off, triggering rebleeding, and even damaging newly formed tissue. After the operation, soft food should be selected, meat is made into meat puree, vegetables are cooked soft and eaten, ensuring that the food is easy to chew and swallow, and does not cause additional burden to the wound.

Second. Oral hygiene taboo

1. No brushing or gargling on the day after surgery

After surgery, blood clots form in the wound, which is an important basis for wound healing. If you brush your teeth or rinse your mouth vigorously on the day after surgery, the impact of the water flow and the mechanical stimulation of the toothbrush can easily make the blood clot fall off, leading to more bleeding. The correct approach is to keep the mouth clean on the day after the operation, and gently gargle with water to remove the remaining blood and food residue in the mouth, but do not gargle or spit water forcefully. From the second day after surgery, you can brush your teeth gently with a soft toothbrush, but avoid the surgical area and brush your teeth gently to prevent damage to the wound.

2. Don’t lick or suck the wound with your tongue

Repeated licking of the tongue can break blood clots and increase the risk of infection; The sucking motion creates negative pressure in the mouth, which can also easily cause the blood clot to fall off. Many patients will feel a foreign body or blood smell at the wound after the operation, can not help but lick or suck, which is a very dangerous behavior. If you really feel uncomfortable, you can relieve it by shifting your attention, such as listening to music, watching TV, etc.

3. Avoid mouthwashes that contain alcohol

Alcohol has a strong irritant, will stimulate the wound, cause pain, is not conducive to wound healing. After surgery, you should choose a mild, alcohol-free professional mouthwash, according to the doctor’s advice to use, generally 2-3 days after surgery, gargle after each meal, keep the mouth clean, reduce the growth of bacteria.

Third. Daily activities taboo

1. No strenuous exercise after surgery

Strenuous exercise such as running, jumping rope, playing basketball, and playing football will speed up blood circulation in the body and increase blood pressure, leading to an increased risk of bleeding from oral wounds. At least one week after the operation, should avoid strenuous exercise, mainly rest, you can carry out some soothing activities, such as walking, but the time should not be too long. Strenuous exercise may also lead to physical fatigue, affect immunity, and is not conducive to wound recovery. After the wound is basically healed and the doctor confirms it, the normal movement is gradually resumed.

2. Don’t overwork and stay up late

After the operation, the body needs time to recover, overwork and staying up late will reduce the body immunity, affect the wound healing speed, and may induce complications such as infection. Ensuring adequate sleep and adequate rest is conducive to the recovery of various body functions. It is recommended to maintain regular work and rest within one week after surgery, sleep no less than 8 hours a day, avoid using electronic devices for a long time, and reduce eye and brain fatigue.

3. Avoid bowing your head for a long time or shaking your head violently

Prolonged ducking can raise head blood pressure and increase the likelihood of bleeding from wounds; Shaking the head violently may cause the clot to displace or fall off. When resting after surgery, the head can be properly padded to maintain the position of the head above the heart, promote blood flow and reduce swelling. In activities such as walking and going up and down stairs, pay attention to smooth movements and avoid sudden head shaking.

Four. Other precautions

1. Do not stop the drug or change the dose at will

The doctor will prescribe painkillers, anti-inflammatory drugs and other drugs according to the specific situation of the patient. After surgery, you must strictly follow the doctor’s instructions to take medicine on time and according to the amount, and you can not stop or reduce the amount of medicine because the pain is relieved or you feel good. Stopping the drug at will may lead to recurrence of inflammation and aggravation of pain, affecting the recovery effect. If there is discomfort or doubt during the medication process, you should communicate with your doctor in time.

2. Don’t ignore wound anomalies

It is normal for the wound to have mild pain and swelling after surgery, but it should not be taken lightly if the wound continues to bleed heavily, the pain is aggravated and cannot be relieved, and there is foul odor and fever at the wound. These may be signs of wound infection or other complications, should immediately contact the doctor or go to the hospital, do not handle it yourself, so as not to delay the condition.

3. Do not wear a mask to compress the wound too early

The tissue around the wound after surgery is relatively fragile, and too tight mask may compress the wound, affect blood circulation, and increase swelling and pain. If you must wear a mask, choose a looser, softer style, and adjust the position and tightness of the mask to avoid direct pressure on the surgical area.

Conclusion

Care after wisdom tooth surgery is a process that requires patience and care. Strict adherence to these contraindications can effectively reduce the occurrence of complications and promote rapid and smooth wound healing. Everyone’s recovery may be different, and if you have any questions about post-operative care, be sure to consult your doctor promptly and follow professional advice to ensure that you can get back to health sooner.
