As dentists receive more and more reports of problems with DIY teeth whitening kits, one thing is becoming increasingly clear. A real danger of DIY teeth whitening is the overuse of these chemicals in pursuit of a perfect whitening effect.
There are risks associated with DIY teeth whitening. For example, a 2002 survey of a hundred people by the University of Southern California School of Dentistry showed that half of the participants experienced tooth sensitivity after using over-the-counter whitening gels. One in 25 participants experienced severe pain in the mouth.
Other side effects of DIY teeth whitening include uneven whiteness of teeth, reddish enamel, and gum irritation. If the chemicals seep into unfilled cavities that the user may not be aware of, or into cracked teeth, the painful damage inside can lead to root canal treatment. Damage from self-use of teeth whitening products, except for cavities, usually goes away on its own after a period of time once the use of the chemicals is stopped.
